EU Parliament - Wilfried Martens Building

The project of 30.000 m² office complex, centrally located in the European district, had to comply with series of regulations - it needed a fresh architectural expression, it had to integrate well with its surroundings, and it had to perform well above average in the field of energy consumption. Urban integration was the greatest challenge as there were different demands on all four sides. Architecturally, the focus on dynamic expression of the entire complex is reflected in the curved volumes in play with the ratio between open and closed parts of the façade, depending on the orientation and the entry of light into the building. Sophisticated integration and energetic architecture are the main reasons for the choice of design with colorful façades, made of sustainable materials.
Orientation of the building allows for both higher performance and playful dynamism of the architectural expression, but helps also to reduce the energy consumption and to make façade being highly efficient. In addition, geothermal energy takes care of the heating and cooling, and the sanitary installations make use of rainwater recuperation.
