Be Mine

On the protected Beringen mining site - the largest industrial heritage site in Flanders - Jaspers-Eyers Architects together with UAU Collectiv built the Be-MINE Boulevard, a balanced mix of residential, retail and leisure spaces, which reconnects once dilapidated old mining site to the city network. Project’s major challenge was to integrate a new construction of considerable size into a location with incredible landscape value and historical context. The building had to fit into the surroundings as naturally as possible, a contemporary take on the site that still preserves its industrial heart.
The eye-catching green roof of 18.000 m² hides a 375-meter-long building underneath it. To anyone looking down over the area from atop of the adjacent hill, even the parking lot is carefully hidden behind the retail park. At the prestigious Shopping Awards, where the retail park received an award in 2016, the project was described as “a perfect integration of stores in the historical context of industrial heritage.”
